A new procedure focused on smoke control areas is now available on RIAMS Libraries.   

The procedure, authored by one of our specialist reviewers, environmental health consultant David Holmes, brings together information on smoke control areas that was previously split between several different procedures in the Environmental Protection module on RIAMS. 

David said: “Having a single procedure dedicated to smoke control areas will make the information easier for officers to find and ensure that the other procedures remain more focused, linking into this overarching guidance.” 

RIAMS Chief Editor Jeremy Manners noted: “Air quality continues to be a major challenge in many areas, affecting the health of communities across the country. Smoke control areas are one way for local authorities to help tackle this and reduce harmful particulate pollution from the burning of solid fuels. This new procedure will assist officers to use their powers to enforce the control of harmful smoke across England and Wales.” 

The procedure, available and adapted for both England and Wales, is available here in RIAMS Libraries, a resource that supports environmental health practitioners across all specialisms to work smarter, network and share good practice.
